Carey later worked as a freelance ethnography and beadwork consultant, as well as author. She was quite active with various academic and museology groups, and worked on various newsletters and periodical publications. She wrote the books "Beads and Beadwork of East and South Africa"; "Myths and Legends of Africa"; and "Beads and Beadwork of West and Central Africa".]
